Many of the essential products we buy for our homes come with a guarantee – whether it’s a new washing machine or a kettle. It protects you in the future – if your washing machine or kettle stop working, you can get in touch with the supplier who sold you the item and get it fixed or replaced at no extra cost.

It’s only if that company you bought the product from has stopped trading that you may be left to replace or fix your appliance at your own cost.

Nobody wants to be in this situation if they have had new windows installed, a conservatory built or a new roof on their house.

Door keys in a front door for a secure home with IBG protection

An insurance backed guarantee, often called an IBG, protects the investment you make in home improvements on your property, so if the company who did the work on your home has ceased trading, you can still make a claim and have any workmanship defects rectified.

IBGs – how it works

When you have work carried out on your home, your installer will issue you with a written guarantee. This will have all the details about exactly what is covered by your guarantee and for how long. When you receive this, it’s a good idea to keep it safe.

IBGs are issued by installation companies to their customers, in addition to their written guarantee.

It means that if the installation or building company ceases to trade, because of retirement, change of career, or other personal situation, your home improvement investment is still protected.

There’s no need for you to take any action to get an IBG. Your installer will register your installation with us and apply for the insurance on your behalf. You will receive documents in the post shortly after your installer has completed the work on your home.

IBGs – making a claim

We understand that it’s a distressing situation if there is a defect in your home, so we keep the claims process simple. If you have some workmanship defects and your installer has ceased trading, click here for information on how to make a claim.

Ask for an Insurance-backed Guarantee

If you’re a homeowner and you’re having some work carried out on your home, it’s important to ask about how your improvements are protected, should something happen in the future. It’s also very important to make sure that your IBG is offered by a UK Authorised Insurer, as this gives you genuine protection. The easiest way to check if your provider is authorised is to check the Financial Services Register.
